Xaviers Accessible Backyard
Xavier’s Accessible Backyard
Xavier is a fun-loving 14-year-old who enjoys LEGO, gaming, colouring in, and spending time with his family. Living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, he approaches life with a smile and continues to make the most of every day despite the challenges he faces.
As Xavier has grown older, his condition has gradually affected his strength and mobility. Everyday tasks have become more difficult, and because of the medication he relies on, his bones have become increasingly fragile, leading to compression fractures. While he is still able to walk, his family knows that maintaining his independence for as long as possible is incredibly important.
When Xavier’s family built their home, they designed it with his future in mind. They created a layout that would one day support his changing mobility, but after pouring everything they had into building a home that would meet his long-term needs, they were unable to complete one important part of the project.
The backyard was designed to have accessible paving that connects the garage, alfresco, and outdoor areas, allowing Xavier to safely move around the entire home and enjoy time outside with his family. Without it, much of the backyard remains difficult to access, limiting the simple moments many families take for granted.
Completing this accessible outdoor space would transform Xavier’s everyday life. It would allow him to safely enjoy his backyard, spend more quality time with his family, and create precious memories while he is still able to experience it independently.
Your support can help give Xavier the freedom to enjoy the outdoors and make lasting memories with the people he loves.
