Reid's Backyard
Reid's Backyard
Reid is a 5 year old boy living with level 5 spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, acquired following a brain injury caused by stage 4 glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. He now requires round the clock care and is supported by 11 specialist teams at Perth Children's Hospital.
Until just one week before his diagnosis, Reid was a happy, healthy baby, meeting all of his milestones with no medical concerns at all. Then, almost overnight, his world changed. The surgeries required to save his life were extensive and have left Reid with lifelong disabilities. Much of his early childhood was spent in hospital, undergoing chemotherapy and managing epilepsy, meaning he experienced very little of life outside a hospital room.
Since transitioning from hospital care to home life, Reid has found the greatest joy outdoors. Unfortunately, most community spaces are not wheelchair accessible, and he often has to sit and watch other children play, unable to join in. Swings, play areas, and open spaces are rarely suitable for his needs.
Reid's mum is currently building a new home designed to support his accessibility needs. However, the outdoor area remains a sandpit, making it completely inaccessible for Reid in his wheelchair. A safe, accessible garden would transform his daily life, giving him freedom, stimulation, and the simple joy of being outside.
After spending most of his life indoors and missing out on play, exploration, and fun, a garden would be life changing for Reid's development and wellbeing.
Your support can help give Reid the joyful childhood and memories every child deserves.
